Most of us have been suffering from stress, especially in these modern times. Stress is an effect of the failure of an organism (whether human or animal) to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats, in actual or imagined.

Generally, stressed people are identified by their state of alarm and adrenaline production, short-term resistance or a slow coping mechanism. Exhaustion, as well as irritability, muscular tension, inability to concentrate and different physiological reactions such as headache and elevated heart rate are also symptoms of stress. If you are experiencing this, you need some break and the best thing to do is relax.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, and there are also many ways we can relax.

It has also been concluded that going to the theater and watching exciting movies that get your emotions going can create enough adrenal stress in 2 hours that normally would take you about 5 days to get this kind of stress. This is especially disturbing when you think about watching the movie in 3D.

In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress.

One way of relaxation is transcendental meditation. Recent studies have also shown that this method might reduce artery blockage, which is a major cause for heart attack and stroke. People practice transcendental meditation by repeating uttering soothing sounds while meditating, this is to achieve total relaxation. The researchers found that practitioners of transcendental meditation significantly reduced the thickness of their arterial wall compared with those who didn’t practice transcendental meditation.

Another study on another method of relaxation, acupuncture, seems to reduce high blood pressure by initiating several body functions for the brain to release chemical compounds known as endorphins. Endorphin helps to relax muscles, ease panic, decrease pain, and reduce anxiety.

Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.

Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences alamost all aspects of us, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, after some time you can feel its effects right away. There are several breathing techniques that can help you reduce stress.

Another easy way to achieve relaxation is exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down. Although exercise is a great way to lose weight, it does not show you how to manage stress appropriately. Exercise should also be used in conjunction with other exercise method.

One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. To gain full relaxation, you need to totally surrender to the handling and touch of a professional therapist. There are several types of massages that also give different levels of relaxation.

Another method of relaxation is Biofeedback. The usual biofeedback-training program includes a 10-hour sessions that is often spaced one week apart.

Hypnosis is one controversial relaxation technique. It is a good alternative for people who think that they have no idea what it feels like to be relaxed. It is also a good alternative for people with stress related health problems.

Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.

These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation. Another reason why we need to relax, aside from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because stress produces hormones that suppress the immune system, relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and in doing so function more efficiently.

Relaxation lowers the activities within the brains’ limbic system; this is the emotional center of our brain. Furthermore, the brain has a periodic need for a more pronounced activity on the right-hemisphere. Relaxation is one way of achieving this.

Breaking free from the stressful lifestyle is a relief. Relaxation cannot only be done by going to a beach or having a vacation trip, relaxation can also be done everyday just by choosing the right technique that you think you can do regularly and you’re comfortable with. Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle

Yoga is one of the most popular types of exercise as it attracts many people for its different approach which is a holistic type in strengthening not only the body, but also the mind. Aside from the fact that it is good for physical health, it also addresses mental and emotional health, because balancing both types of health contributes to an individual’s overall well being. In terms of physical benefits, doing yoga exercises daily can help improve flexibility, posture, circulation and digestion and in terms of mental health, yoga can reduce stress by bringing calm. Yoga exercises achieve this by making use of postures, breathing and meditation intended to relax the body and strengthen the body.

While yoga attracts many people’s interest because of its health benefits, sometimes they are discouraged because of the perceived difficulty of practicing yoga positions. Indeed, yoga can be challenging and taxing because the body often isn’t used to moving in ways that it normally doesn’t. Also, if yoga positions are done incorrectly, they can actually damage the body. This is why it’s important to beginners to be supervised and to start out at a slower pace. It is best to learn good stretching exercises and breathing practices.

There are lots of yoga poses so don’t feel overwhelmed by it. In due time, your yoga practice will be an enduring pursuit thus, giving you some time to learn all poses. As your practice progresses, you will be able to take more challenging poses comfortably. For the meantime that you are still a beginner, keep it simple.

Yoga positions include those that are performed while standing, reclining, sitting down, bending forward, backwards, to the side, twisting, inverting, and balancing. These are a lot of different poses and it can seem intimidating at first. Yoga positions for beginners are those that are the easiest and most basic. First timers should start with yoga positions for beginners that they can handle, before they gradually work up to the more advanced yoga positions. Yoga positions on the floor are good for beginners because they don’t require as much balance and strength as other positions. One of the most common yoga positions for beginners is the siddhasana pose, a sitting pose that most people commonly stereotype yoga meditation with. It’s the one where you sit on the floor with legs crossed with hands on the knees and palms facing up. This position is good for back posture and for opening the hips. Another good basic position is baddha konasana, which involves sitting with the legs in the butterfly position, feet together and fingers interlaced around the toes. Baddha konasana is also good for the spine and hips, and it strengthens the chest.

The golden rule when doing yoga is to not overdo anything, especially for beginners. There are some yoga poses that could make you feel and uncomfortable. Another thing to bear in mind is to accompany every position with the proper breathing as it plays a vital role even if it’s not a physical body movement of the exercise. Practice these positions daily or regularly and as you become comfortable and you’re used with it, you will be able to move on to the intermediate yoga positions.

A good, habitual practice of yoga will give you a relieving feeling from stress and tension caused by back pains. Research shows that yoga is the number one most effective exercise for lessening back pain. That is why yoga has been recommended for people who suffer from back pain although it is not primarily a physical therapy; it is now often offered as a part of the therapy regimen and has proven effective. However, if yoga doesn’t purge the back pains, it will certainly reduce its intensity and frequency. Thus, practicing yoga for back pain may be just what you need. Be very careful in trying back stretches and positions. Sometimes, just bending down and picking up your shoe can radically throw your back out.

Developed in the context of Hinduism, yoga was originally practiced with the goal of uniting the body and mind. In the Hindu tradition, the soul is an invisible system of power centers located along the spine, with branches leading from these to other parts of the body and a main line, connecting each power center to the one above and below it. The system carries a spiritual energy that is inhaled. In theory, practicing yoga for back pain fills your body with this healing and vital force.

In yoga, you’re not only breathing in oxygen, but a spiritual energy that surrounds you. This is life energy. In a yoga breathing exercise, you breathe from your belly, tightening your sphincter muscles with each inhalation. The energy gathers in the ‘power center’, located about two inches below your navel. You hold the breath for a few seconds, and when you exhale, you loosen your sphincter muscle and let your whole body exhale the wasted and noxious energy that may be the cause of your pain.

The life energy that you gather in your belly is stored there, and it flows up and down to other power centers, located at points along your spine. You have six power centers in the body and one outside, above the skull. Two power centers are located below the belly power center, called the ‘burner’, in the Zen tradition, one at the base of the spine and the other in the pubic area. Above the burner are three other power centers, the heart and the throat power centers, and the spiritually-charged power center, between the eyes. Each power center absorbs life energy, but power also flows from center to center through the channels that connect these.

As you breathe, you will the power that has gathered in the burner to move from power center to power center, allowing the life force to energize one center after another. If you’re practicing yoga for back pain, you’ll begin to notice warmth, radiating from an energized power center and then spreading into the painful area. By infusing your body with life force and concentrating it mentally in the area of the pain, you’re bathing that part of your body with healing energy.

Yoga practice aims to foster the free flow of life energy among these centers and, through their branches, to the rest of the body. Yoga postures enable this. They are somewhat unnatural postures that tend to stretch the muscles and loosen them. Although some positions may be stressful, the stress will strengthen the muscles. This is one of the results you want when practicing yoga for back pain.

You can begin practicing yoga for back pain right now, but not all yoga poses relieve back pain and in fact, some of it can even worsen the pain. It is important to know which yoga poses will be the most helpful in alleviating the back pain. Seek guidance and do the yoga exercises under the supervisions of a certified yoga instructor. Do extensive research on yoga if you plan to do it on your own and consult some experts. After this, you can go to some yoga websites and learn how you can use yoga to increase your vitality and health. Through yoga, you may be able to master that back pain yet.

Meditation is one of the Five Principles of Yoga. It is the practice by which there is constant observation of the mind and in fact, both mind and body are consciously relaxed and focused. By meditation, your mind is focused at one point and makes it still in order to perceive the ‘inner self’ or ‘inner core’. In today’s society meditation for 15 minutes in the morning can set your day ahead to be more relaxed and calm.

The practice of Meditation allows you to achieve a superior sense of purpose and strength of will. It also helps you to attain a clearer mind, improve focus and concentration, and learn and discover the insight, knowledge, wisdom, and tranquility within you. In addition to this, practitioners of this art is said to have a more positive outlook in life. Meditation is most commonly associated with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines.

However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your own living room! Although there are many different approaches to meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. The most important among these principles is that of removing obstructive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and calming the mind with a deep sense of focus. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a higher quality of activity. The negative thoughts you have – those of noisy neighbors, bossy officemates, that parking ticket you got, and unwanted spam– are said to contribute to the ‘polluting’ of the mind, and shutting them out is allows for the ‘cleansing’ of the mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.

Some practitioners even shut out all sensory input – no sights, no sounds, and nothing to touch – and try to detach themselves from the commotion around them. You may now focus on a deep, profound thought if this is your goal. It may seem deafening at first, since we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of everything around you. If you find the meditating positions you see on television threatening – those with impossibly arched backs, and painful-looking contortions – you need not worry.

The principle here is to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. This may be while sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, and even walking. If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that would be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only no-no is slouching and falling asleep. Loose, comfortable clothes help a lot in the process since tight fitting clothes have a tendency to choke you up and make you feel tense. The place you perform meditation should have a soothing atmosphere. It may be in your living room, or bedroom, or any place that you feel comfortable in. You might want an exercise mat if you plan to take on the more challenging positions (if you feel more focused doing so, and if the contortionist in you is screaming for release).

You may want to have the place arranged so that it is soothing to your senses. Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the humming of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help in that regard, so stocking up on aromatic candles isn’t such a bad idea either. The monks you see on television making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, in simple terms, is a short creed, a simple sound which, for these practitioners, holds a mystic value. You do not need to perform such; however, it would pay to note that focusing on repeated actions such as breathing, and humming help the practitioner enter a higher state of consciousness.

The principle here is focus. You could also try focusing on a certain object or thought, or even, while keeping your eyes open, focus on a single sight. One sample routine would be to – while in a meditative state – silently name every part of you body and focusing your consciousness on that part. While doing this you should be aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally visualize releasing this tension. It works wonders. In all, meditation is a relatively risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the effort (or non-effort – remember we’re relaxing). Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body. And there has been a growing consensus in the medical community to further study the effects of such. So in the near future, who knows, that mystical, esoteric thing we call meditation might become a science itself!
